What is Discord?

Discord is a community app that provides text and voice chat. It's available on all platforms, including web.

Discord is the hub of our community, where writers chat, swap work, hold writing sprints and hang out. If you are unfamiliar with Discord, you can find lots of information on this page to help you navigate.

Getting started

The community Discord is very easygoing and welcoming. While you can jump right in by clicking Edinburgh SFF Discord, where you can fill in the short membership application form. We encourage everyone to familiarise themselves with our Code of Conduct before engaging with other writers on the server.

Channels

When you first join our Discord, you'll see many channels. Before you do anything, look around and feel free to introduce yourself in the #introductions channel.

Click here for our Channel guide.

Chatting in Discord

Discord is much like any other chat client, but there are a few useful commands for formatting your messages.

  • @username to tag another chatter & #channelname to display a link to a channel
  • || some redacted message || to hide any sensitive messages until clicked
  • ```this is a formatted message``` to display a block of formatted text, such as an excerpt from your writing

You can also use gifs or post links to websites or videos, but please keep these relevant to the channel and conversation.

Voice & video channels

Discord also supports voice and video. These may be used freely.

Terms of use

However you choose to participate in the conversation, please keep it polite and respectful. Please refer to our conduct page for more information.

We have an active moderation team, and if you have questions, please feel free to DM them or contact admin@edinburghsff.com
